How hard is it to locate?

I’m wondering how hard it is to locate some N scale locos with DCC & sound. And if I can find any Steam Engines with DCC, Sound & Smoke.

If these items are relatively easy to find, where would I get them. The LHSs doesn’t seem to carry much of a selection that are DCC let along DCC with sound and I have’t found any DCC, sound and smoke.

I’m looking for a smaller switcher engine for a yard, don’t really care too much about period as I’m not doing a proto. Also, a mid size steam engine, something around a X-8-X or X-10-X. As well as an “A” / “B” unit from around the 50s and perhaps a more modern Engine as well. Not too fussy about markings although I’d like PGE, CP or CN if possible.

Finding N scale locos with DCC/Sound/Smoke may not exist. There aer only a very select few in HO that have DCC Sound and smoke, I believe only from MTH.

There are plenty with DCC and sound however.

I went to a fav of mine online- wholesaletrains.com -and went to N scale trains section and under search typed in " w/DCC" and came up with over 19 pages of N scale locos listed for DCC here:

You may have to search through the diesels to find your steamers. Some steamers are listed on the last pages as well.

I’m not aware either of any n scale steam engines with smoke units.

In HO, Broadway Limited also has smoke units in several of their new models. Some athearn and trix engines can be fitted with seuthe smoke units, not sure how though.

If its just DCC and sound, Athearn has some in n scale, I think Bachmann Spectrum too. If you like diesels, Broadway Limited/PCM has some great new stuff out in n scale.

Sound in N scale is very hard to find. It is usually limited to the bigger locomotives. The only loco’s I’m aware of that come from the manufacture with sound is the BLI E-8’s. the only reason I know is because I have an A-B-A set. To get sound in the smaller loco’s it usually involves milling the frame to fit the speaker in.
