I have started to add scenery to my layout. I was just wondering what you guys and gals think. I have only done a few spots so far and I am not done painting the rock surfaces.
Sorry I do not have very good pics.
Sorry about this pic I could not get my hand steady. (Web-cam)
I think it looks very good, to be perfectly honest. If I could quibble a bit, I find my eyes drawn along the line between the layers of rock, and that doesn’t work well for me…I’d prefer to see more bouldering, less of what may be foam layering, to be blunt. So, if you could break up that long line just a bit here and there, I think you will have a highly creditable scene there.
Still, the rock face carving that you have done is very good, and your trees are realistic and well placed.
And even the craggiest rock serfaces are not devoid of plants. In fact, that seam Crandell mentions would be just the spot for a bunch of plants to grow.
Have you been through the state of Kentucky? The “layering” you see is very common there. To a lesser extent, I’ve also seen this in Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Sure, the line may be the seam between layers of foam, but I think it is in no way a detriment to the scene.
Now, if you were modeling a different region, then I would expect the rocks to look different.
Brad and Ryan, no I have not seen the location you mention. If the OP has replicated the look faithfully, then he has done very well…I’d say. Either way, I intend for him to get credit for very good rockwork. [8D]
No,no, no…! Just break up the line in one or two places. One chunk can be larger than another, even to the extent that the bottom of one slips below that longer line.
I guess I was just trying to point out that it looks a little too much like stacked foam layers, both very nicely carved mind you, but stacked. I haven’t personnally seen rocks like that stacked along a very nice shatter line…shale yes, other sedimentary rocks, yes, but not what I think you mean for us to see, a more mineralized, metamporphic look. I am thinking more Canadian Shield look…perhaps inappropriately, as the others have suggested.
