How it's made inspired industry

Happy New year!!!

While recovering from last night,my wife and I were watching How it’s Made and they were showing how synthetic rubber is made. That got me curios about the industry so I googled it and found this link for raw materials.

I have a long spur on my layout that would fit right in there if compressed correctly. I believe it would allow me to change out box cars, tank cars and covered hoppers for Raw materials. There are storage tanks at the industry.

I would enjoy your opinions or idea’s on modeling this industry.

If your files of model railroader go back at least 51 years, here in an idea…

Rubber Corporation of America GATX 25940 2-dome TM 100,000 lb. capy

blt 11-48 according to model lettering

only 2 cars built per article; 54 Reg lists 2-car series 25940-25941"

plan & construction article ModRRer Jul60 p.36

somebody did their home work. [:D]

Here are satellite photographs of Goodyear’s plant near Beaumont, TX.

You will also need some cars to haul the rubber. Although I do see a couple of boxcars mixed in with them.

Uh, no, not really. I put off my homework while cataloguing railroad and modeling information.

WOW!!! I don’t think I can compress all that into my little space. :frowning: Oh well, maybe just a scrap yard or furniture manufacturing building or something.

Thanks for the images and the input.

Something to consider is that the Goodyear plant may have multiple plants within the facility producing multiple rubbers. You might want to look around at others to see how small they can get.

What exactly did you want to include on your layout - certainly not the entire complex?

Without seeing a diagram of your layout, I don’t know what amount of space you have available. Were you wanting to have the actual loading/unloading docks for the different car types?

If you can live without the docks, you could place a few “signature” structures near the spur to show that it serves a synthetic rubber plant. And decorate the adjoining backdrop to show more rubber plant buildings. You can spot tankers, covered hoppers, boxcars etc. on the spur to be picked-up later by a [fictitious] plant switcher.

Just my [2c]…
