i have a metal model kit that needs painting and was told to use vinegar to etch it so the paint would hold. Was not told how long to keep it in, so was wondering if this was even possible and if there was a better way, Thanks in advance for your help
For brass car sides, I let them soak in white vinegar overnight. That seems sufficient to etch them. They take paint just fine, even without primer.
If you’re talking about zamac (whitemetal), cut the vinegar about 50/50 with water, and an hour will do it if it’s new metal (not tarnished), or a couple hours if it is tarnished. Definately don’t leave it in too long, this will start to eat the metal. Bowser makes many zinc and zamac kits, so they have some guidance on their website.
