How many bicentennial schemes were made? got pictures?

Recently I’ve been interested in Bicentennial schemes, and how many there were, what they all looked like, etc. I know that Trains did an article with several pictures, but from what I can tell, that was not at all all-inclusive. In the following posts, I’ve added all of the bicen schemes that I’m aware of. If there are any others that I don’t have here, please respond, with a picture if you have one.

thanks

Don’t forget GG1 #4800. One of the ugliest.

IHB and BRC both had particularly well-done Bi-Centennial jobs. The IHB used a variation of the lightning stripe and BRC used a variation of their standard paint scheme. Both were low-key and BRC 534 was one of the last Bi-Centennial paint jobs to remain in service.

Saeboard Coast Line 1776, a U36B started it all. Let’s not forget that one.

There was a fairly well known photo spread in “Trains Magazine” of most of the Class 1 Bicentennial units posed together in Chicago done back in 1975. A few years back, IIRC 2006 (the thirtieth anniversary of the Bicentennial celebrations), Trains ran an article about how the photo shoot was arranged and conducted…

There are a few missing from this list … The Trains spread was one of the best.

Amtrak also had a GG! #649 I think.

Are there any bicentennial locomotives still around or have they all been repainted?

See Extra 2200 South Issues #50-58 as the bicentennials were covered in those issues. Then Extra 2200 South did a compilation of all bicentennials in issues #63-64. There were hundreds of bicentennial locomotives, y’all are just scratching the surface.

I believe the final count was well north of 200 locomotives with bicentennial paint when industrial, shortline, and other owners were included.

Some roads painted other equipment instead of locomotives in RWB, such as the Georgia Railroad, West Point Route, and Frisco cabooses.

SCL 1776 was definitely the first and one of the best to me. I also liked the ICG(2 units due to fiery crash) and Milwaukee Road schemes, however none were really bad except the KCS(good intentions but bad result).

I think G&W had one too. I’m aware of the trains picture, but I found that it was missing several of them. I was wondering if anyone had a more complete list.

N&W’s #1776 still exists and holds court at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

I’ve seen it in person. They just recently decided to fix it up, right? Are there any more plans to restore bicentennials?
