How many feet will a woodland scenic shaker ballast

How many feet will a woodland scenics fine gray ballast shaker (32oz) ballast? Is it a case of “how many licks”? I picked up 2 shakers today and I’m wondering how much more I will need. The track I plan to ballast will be a branchline (somewhat down in the weeds) and not mainline so the ballast layer will not be thick. I’ll need to be able to ballast 100 feet or so. Thanks.

Nate

That should be about right. I did 25 or 30 feet with medium ballast in HO, and used about half of one of those containers.

My guess would be about 50’ for one shaker. Depends on how well and deep you ballast.

Shoot. For a minute there, I thought I was going to see

“How much ballast will a woodland scenic ballast shake if a woodland scenic ballast shaker can shake ballast”

Don’t mind me, it’s been one of those days.

Has anyone noticed that the WS shakers are identical to the containers that some grocery products, notably bacon bits (“contains no bacon”) come in? I like fake bacon bits on my salad, so I save the empty containers, buy the ballast and scenery materials in bags, and dump them into the containers and shake from there. I haven’t compared prices, but I suspect it’s cheaper than buying the WS shakers every time.

Yes, I noticed that Kroger’s store brand pepper comes in the same containers. I didn’t even know you could buy WS in large bags. My LHS only stocks the plastic jars.

Actually, it really is cheaper to buy the shakers then the little bags.

It take a little less then 3 bags to fill a shaker - $3.80 x 3 = $11.40

A shaker costs $9.95

Or you can buy the large bags and fill a container in one go for $7
