I’ve used tin foil to make molds of real rocks. You get a nice flat back for mounting. I’ve also used foil molds of certain tree bark. These looked really good. Best thing for paint is the WS rock stain kit.
I use latex molds made from real rocks, I then add a resin into the mold and then glue the rock to the base I had already made, then paint it and it looks real!
