How many people could visit K-10 Model trains, sort of a Midwest get together

K-10 Model Trains is my LHS and a great one. Besides having a good selection of train gear he has a great layout. It is 60 X 80 feet with over a mile of track.

Other day Silver Pilot Yankee Flyer made a comment he would like to visit K-10. This got me think about maybe a Midwest Get Together. K-10 is 14 miles from St Louis in Maryville IL. There is plenty of affordable motels in the area.

If, we where to try something like this, what would you folks like to do? One Thursday a month K-10 runs Op’s for the local crowed. First Sunday of ever month it open to all to run, there are a lot of kids. Or would you rather see if I can get a day all to are selfs?

I have not ran this by Ken, the owner of K-10 yet. I think he may go for it.

Here is a link to his shop to see what he has and so you can figure how far of a drive it would be.

All so there is the Saint Louis Museum of Transportation.

You could see one of these in person!

Let me know.

i only live about 20 miles away and would like to go to that shop but it is never open when i am in the area. what gives?

I NEVER made such a statement! Please don’t attribute quotes and comments to me that I did not make.

Silver Pilot

Sorry Sliver Pilot, it was Yankee Flyer that made the statement.

Far as K-10 hours, Ken is not well so he had to cut back hours. Shop is open till 10:00 PM Thursday nights and Saturday 12:00 till 5:00.

Have been to both K-10 and museum. They are both great and I highly reccommend them.

I would think a Saturday “roundup” would be great. Have a daughter at SLU so coming from Nashville would be

tricky if not on a Saturday. Good luck with your idea. There is a big parking area so could have a tailgate type get together!

Ken, hope you are feeling ok. Ken was great when I visited. Even though trains weren’t running, he told me

all about the layout and asked questions. Shop was good too.

doc steve

Way too far for me.

I would come if it was on a weekend, I have school Mon thru Thurs. Im about an hour west of St Louis. I’ve been to both the museum and the layout and there definetly worth the trip!! Isnt Simon1966 from around there?

K-10 is a cool place. Great layout, good people. I usually stop there when I’m driving back home from Chicago or Wisconsin. I would be interested in attending.

I’m all for it, but it would need to be a weekend, Saturday preferably, and before or after July 20-August 18th(?) for dad or mom and I to be able to make it (TrainFest @ Owosso, then IN State Fairtrain). We’d be coming from Central IN, but it’s worth the trip, and I think to get everyone running comfrtably, it would need to be closed off to outsiders running, since a bunch of us are unfamiliar with the layout, but I’m all for people cming in and watching. And possibly, mabe make it an afternoon/evening thing, so that we can squeze in St. Louis.

Doc Steve, I am feeling fine, it is the other Ken that is having health problems.

I am 95% sure Simon 1966 would show up, he lives with in 15 miles or so.

My thinking is if we could turn this into a weekend event with some locals. I have not seen them but from what I understand there are some great home layouts in a 20 mile radius. I think a pulling contest would be fun. How many of us have wonder what there Behemoth could pull if they had the room. With K-10 1.5 grade and 32 radius turns you would have the bench to make a pull on.

Would you think a small fee paid to K-10 would be out of line? My self, I be happy to pay say $20.00 to run his bench for a day or two. I have been going there for 3 years now and ever time I look at the bench I see something new.

I will run it by Ken, the owner of K-10 trains and see what he thinks.

PS, any train shows coming up in Collinsville IL? It is 10 minutes away.

Considering the distances that soem are coming, 20 may b high. The 5 standard that Ken charges might be about right. a tad more if it becomes an exclusive might be alright, say 10.

Since we’re on the topic of pulling stuff, I’ve been working on a roughly prototypical length Ringling Circus Train. While it’s no where near done now, at some point it will be, and I think K10 may be the only place I can run the full train without straightlining in the area. What is policy for train lenghts, and out of area trains?

No limit on length that I have ever heard of. Far as bring your own cars, they have to have metal wheels.

Reason I was thinking $20.00 is if this happens, it will more than likely be on a day K-10 would normally be closed.

K-10 all so has 2 DC lines as well.

I live about 45 miles away, I’d love to come.

OK folks, seem there is a little interest. So tell me what you folks want, time frame (not a date but time would frame you would need to plain the trip), time it so there is a train show near by?

Need some feed back besides I like to see K-10.

Hello
I go over to K10 ever once in a while, just a few days ago I bought some passenger cars. I was going to go by when the club was running to see how they use all that track layout. I live close but I checked the odometer the other day and the round trip was like 80 miles.[:-^] Of course any excuse for a trip is good enough for me. I’m retired so timing is not a problem for me, unless management (wife) objects.

Keep those wheels a rolling. [:D]
