how many trains are out there?

how many trains are on the mainline right now in the contenetal US?

I know of one for certain. When I let the dogs out a few minutes ago I heard the horn sounding as he approached the crossing down the street.[:D]

CSX runs about 1200 a day.

All of them. As near as I can tell, there are no trains in here…

…sorry…

A lot.

one, this area is cleaning up after floods, I haven’t seen it but I suspect it is a work train, ballast cars and such, several washouts reported on mainline in region .

I had breakfast with a friend of mine this morning that is the Yardmaster here for BNSF. He thinks on average, they run about 1000 trains a day.

There are a lot.

Here is a link I found on a Google search:

I searched on the quoted string, “Association of American Railroads”

I had no idea KCS was ahead of UP on operating efficiency. 97.38% The only one higher is Grand Trunk Western

In the U.S there is somthing like 20,000 locomotives and 1-2 million freight cars.

not that many around here… This is a good thought though.
