how many trains are on the mainline right now in the contenetal US?
I know of one for certain. When I let the dogs out a few minutes ago I heard the horn sounding as he approached the crossing down the street.[:D]
CSX runs about 1200 a day.
All of them. As near as I can tell, there are no trains in here…

one, this area is cleaning up after floods, I haven’t seen it but I suspect it is a work train, ballast cars and such, several washouts reported on mainline in region .
I had breakfast with a friend of mine this morning that is the Yardmaster here for BNSF. He thinks on average, they run about 1000 trains a day.

In the U.S there is somthing like 20,000 locomotives and 1-2 million freight cars.
