How many would be interested in an HO model of UP SD70ACe 2010 (BSA Heritage) in plastic

Hello,

I sent a question to a major manufacturer that has produced a number of the UP Heritage SD70ACEs, regarding whether they would eventually produce UP 2010, the Boy Scouts of America 100th anniversary commemorative locomotive. Their response was,

“Thank-you for your inquiry. Please note that we currently do not have any plans to produce a model of UP 2010.”

I don’t know if a letter-writing campaign would do any good, but I’m wondering just how much interest there would be out there for this loco.

Plus: it’s a Heritage unit, and those seem to be sufficiently popular that at least two manufacturers have offered units from UP and NS.

Minus: it’s rather of a specialty unit, for those who model 2010 onward (obviously), and roads on which this UP locomotive might appear.

So… would YOU buy it? I would, but I’m prejudiced- I happen to model the UP, and I’m an Eagle Scout. [:)]

Since I don’t model the UP, I would have no interest in one. I was a tenderfoot though. [:D]

The only thing I do with UP locos is patch them. Still the heritage series look nice.

The manufacturer may have inquired and with licensing fees now being charged by many organizations and companies the manufacturer may have felt the the cost would not be offset by the number of sales of the unit.

I wrote to Kato USA with the very same suggestion for N scale. Though I don’t model UP, I would grab an N model in a second (perhaps an HO one if that’s all there is), as I have two Eagle Scout sons, one of whom received his Eagle rank during the anniversary. I suspect the market would be pretty good for any scale model of the BSA locomotive beyond rail modelers.

Id be interested in it, but wasnt the BSA 2010 unit a GEVO for UP?

I think I read somewhere that the licensing fees for the BSA logo was very hefty. OMI did run this unit and I think is who commented on the fees.

UP 2010 is indeed an ES44AC as shown here: http://www.uprr.com/newsinfo/graphics/media_kit/boyscouts/roster/9046.jpg

Ya know, you’re right:

pertinent info:

Model GE 4400-horsepower “C45AC”

AKA ES45AC.

That’s really stupid of me, wasn’t it. It would help to contact a manufacturer that actually MAKES an ES45AC/C45AC. Excuse me while I go slap some stupid outa my face. [:$]

And regarding another post… IIRC, UP has come to terms regarding licensing fees almost six years ago:

http://mrr.trains.com/en/sitecore/content/Home/News%20and%20Reviews/MR%20Express/2006/11/MTH%20negotiates%20new%20Union%20Pacific%20licensing%20deal%20for%20all.aspx

The BSA, on the other hand… I’m again embarrassed that I didn’t think of the licensing on their side, only of the benefit of visibility. Ah, such a short-sighted nation we’ve become.

I wonder what it will take to make up the proper set of decals…?

I had an opportunity a year or so ago to buy one of those (offered by a guy on one of the UP-specific Yahoo mailing lists). He was asking just shy of $2000, for one of nine (supposedly) sold to the general public (and six more given to BSA executives).

I didn’t argue with the price. I merely apologized that my bonus wasn’t THAT good.

Well, let’s see:

Gauge - too wide (1435mm - I model 1067mm and 762mm.)

Scale - too small (1:87.1 - model 1:80.)

Time - too late (by 48 years. If it wasn’t on rails in September, 1964…)

Place - the wrong side of a rather wide ocean.

Sorry, but I’ll pass. If someone gives me one it’ll be trade goods as soon as he’s out the door.
