I am constructing a 4 x8 layout and I need a round about figure on how much it will wiegh?
Factoring in the following.
-Foam base and pine benchwork.
- Small town and a grain facilty.
- Simple twice around oval with a few turnouts.
- Foam where ever I can use it.

I’m going to be using a http://www.hoister.com/selection.php system. Recommended by a good person here.
Well, my layout is just a little over 4x8, and is made of three sections, all constructed with 2x4 perimeter, and 2x3 joist lumber, and 100% plaster over foam scenery. I would estimate the total weight (without the legs attached) at about 110 lbs. Obviously there’s double the lumber for it being sectional, and the fact that I used construction grade material. The benchtop is 1/2" plywood. I’d immagine any one-piece 4x8 layout to weight no more than 60-70 lbs.
Wood and Plywood have densities of about 0.5 g/cc.
Extruded foam is about 0.00021 g/cc
Plaster is about 1.5 g/cc
Most plastic hobby plastic is around 1.2 g/cc
Based on this information, just the 2x4 and plywood of mtrails’ layout is almost 90lbs with nothing on it.
For what it’s worth, my 36" x 56" layout weighs 12 lbs.
That’s without the buildings which would probably add another 1 or 2 pounds.
It’s built with a wood frame (1x2) and styrofoam and foamcore board. It is very sturdy and has worked fine for about 12 years.
