How much improved?

I am considering buying an older [but in excellent condition] LGB Forney. Are there significant improvements in the new run of Forneys that would make it wiser to buy new? My plans include conversion to RC/battery and sound.
Thanks,
JimC.

I believe the older Forney is slightly heavier and therefore can pull slightly better.

New forney’s may have more built-in electronics, but I believe the only real difference is the weight .

If a new LGB engine has MTS then running an old and MTS version together on Analog will be a problem.

I would not buy one as it probably doesn’t have a “D” gear box.

Rgds Ian

D gearbox is only for those wanting to go with MTS or DCC for easier wiring (plug and play)

The Columbus per LGB’s product site does have the D gearbox.

Yes well i only run LGB with decoders fitted, once you are up to this level you wouldn’t have it any other way. I do so many things that you just can’t do unless you have DCC.

rgds ian

PS i would be amazed if it truly has a “D” gearbox.

" I do so many things that you just can’t do unless you have DCC."
Crap. Go for real individual control, ie R/C, even better, RCS.
Ian, I’m sure you’re a nice bloke but just because you use something doesn’t make it the best, just your choice.
Rene’, I’ll leave if you want me to but sometimes I get a gutful of the SunshineCoast connection posting just to up his numbers.

I would say if you can get ANY forney GET IT!

If your going full on battery/RC, (No track powered DCC or MTS) then the older ones should be even easier to convert as there less crap to wire around.

DO IT!

Its a free world and i can say what i like; nothing like a bit of controversy though.

You are quite wrong about just about everything you said.

Untill you have gone as far as i have with DCC and its ramifications you have no idea of what you are talking about, i didn’t until i got this far.

Whay don’t you come up to the Sunshine Coast, which has far better weather than where you are now and have a look at what i am doing, you will be as surprised as i was; as have been many others.

As far as getting kicked off the forum, you really haven’t said anything that offends.

Regards Ian

OK, Ian, you win. Hope the DCC has solved the camber problems…& the points problems…& the reversing problems…& the un-coupling problems…& the shorting problems…& the… …OH! am I repeating myself?
Weather is what you prefer. I remember well the quote from “Don’s Party”…‘One GOD*** perfect day after another! Doesn’t it ever change!!!’
I’ll stick with 4 seasons, not hot & steamy & rainy & hot & steamy.
Hope your DCC track doesn’t rust. My R/C track doesn’t care.
