How NOT to build or sell a layout

I found this interesting layout for sale in ebay. Take a look…

http://cgi.ebay.com/HO-HO3-LARGE-CUSTOM-MODEL-TRAIN-LAYOUT-DEISEL-ENGINES_W0QQitemZ190048671266QQihZ009QQcategoryZ11646QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It looks like someone puked all over their layout with “cheap” brand train stuff. Give it to a niece or nephew, but don’t try to sell this white elephant. Geeez.

just looking at that gives me a miagrain [%-)]

Only $4995 and nobody has jumped on this “great deal???” [:O]

Ya think they got the decimal point in the wrong spot? Maybe $49.95??? That’s all this piece of crap is worth!!!

cf7 try moving the decimal one more time to the left cause $49.95 is to much

Just remember that not allof us are capable of producing a Franklin and South Manchester. He does have a lot packed into this layout. Lots of action items. How did he spend $17,000 on this piece of crap? If the bidding reaches $6,500, he’ll throw in a minature video system that cost him $1,000. Wow such a deal! I guess he got taken on this item the way he got taken on the $17,000 worth of model items when he built his layout. By the way, what are the greem gobs running down the front of the power pack in one of the pictures?

… ow… i think the ringling bros. lost a part of their circus…

so, how many locos would we need to get a string of… say 5 cars, up that 9% grade?

Thats where the puke dripped after he spewed. [:)]

People, that is not a layout worth that much.

That is a visual powerpoint on what NOT to do with your railroad if you want to achieve a believable environment for your trains.

Half tempted to add up the mixture and see how how high that steaming pile adds up. It aint gonna be 5 thousand I tell you that right now.

Excuse me while I go and hide my eyes from this monstrosity.

Another [illegitimate] child of the Gorre & Daphetid. . .

Well I will agree with that part of the statement…however…

constantly on this site we say “its you’re railroad”, “build it how you want to” that feeling seems to be absent from this thread, ‘the builder’ whoever it was obviously put a lot of time and energy into this layout, maybe it isnt as ‘realistic’ as ones found on the cover of MR, but I would be willing to bet it has a higher level of completion than atleast 90% of the posters in this thread who are calling it ‘crap’. Sure it may not be your ideal of ‘realistic’, but to me calling someone elses efforts crap is just plain rude, especially when every scene is detailed, every structure is complete(maybe not to craftsman kit standards no, but complete and detailed yes) the scenery is complete, the town is populated and the rolling stock is weathered, no it doesnt look like Bob Grechs, Cliff Powers or Joe Fugates layout pictures but then not many of our layouts do.

We all know how quickly costs add up in this hobby, so, to complete a layout that size with over 1700 ‘lil people’ , 20 locos plus everything else the figure quoted could easily be valid, as for the $1000 ‘train cam’ I got one for $15.00 on ebay last year, they are readily available for that price.

Karl.

I got exhausted just looking at it.

The Crime Scene Investigators are enroute to take DNA on the powerpacks.

Ugh.

However, looking at it, I get this sudden urge to scream, “Fire !”, just to see what would happen

If it looks like poo, and smells like poo, well by God its poo. I see your avatar says UK. Do you hail from the United Kingdom? If so, you should know us Americans are a rude sort of bunch to begin with ,so please do not take offence.[:)]

My brother lives in the U.K. Are you a yellow belly or a taffy? Only one from the U.K. would know what I’m talking about. [:D]

It looks like someone just went out and started cramming as much onto their layout without any plan or purpose. It looks to me like someone who would see something at his LHS that looked cool and bought it without bothering to consider whether it actually belonged. Probably somebody who just liked building structures. I didn’t read the whole thing but it wouldn’t surprise me if this was an estate sale.

See that merchant row in the center? he had to paint the garish colors onto the window area. Could not leave it the way they are.

The topper was the rainbow colored baggage car in one of the shots.

If I MUST say something GOOD about the railroad is the trees. I think someone has a talent for tree planting.

I agree, and just as Karl said, I think it is a perfect example of the “Its my railroad and I’ll do whatever I want with it” philosophy. I might even try to save some of those photos to use in a FAQ about layout philosophies.

Did anyone else notice the “zig-zag” yard diagram on the control panel? 4 moves to get from the farthest track to the “main”.

Let’s just say the layout is busy.

Given the prominate Red Light District [:O] on this layout, I don’t think giving it to a niece or nephew would be appropriate unless removed. (Select the link to see a larger image and you’ll get a bunch of photos.)

Whoa - you guys are rough.

Considering the amount of Plywood & Pacifics and Pink Foam & Westerns I see here, some of you are coming off as a bit snarky and elitist.

I’m rooting for him to sell it - then who has the last laugh?

If I had the means, I would be interested in it. Not as a complete layout, but a great source of parts for mine. There isn’t over 4 thousand dollars worth of parts there for me, and I live a long way from CA, so I won’t be bidding. Most of my current layout parts have come from other layouts I have purchaced from estate sales and such. Most of them weren’t pretty, but it did get me the parts I needed.

I scratch built a tower on Friday. To any craftsman I am sure it would not pass inspection. You can tell the solder joints are solder joints, I did not follow any scale prototypical drawings or anything, but I like it and that is what matters. I am sure that the creater of that layout likes their layout and that is what matters. You never know, that person may frequent these forums and be reading these postings…
