Just saw an add, trainweb.org has a free site also.
Ok so I exaggerated the space but I thought it was 500gig. So it is 500meg. I paid $43 and it says I have 100megs. But I do not compress my photos at all and they are about 997k average size. I have 250 photos on the site and it is up to 235megs of space used. Not bad because my pictures will not just keep growing without disposing of the older pics. I am new to www.pbase.com but I am very satisfied with it. HOWEVER I am 100% aware that just about everyone who has a different hosting site will swear by it too. They will say that they are very happy with their service. So in the end it is basically a decision of how much you want to pay, what kind of website (hosting or actual website name) and lastly
Does this mean you’ll be leaving the forums?
hehe, forgot about hostdime… I actually have one of the reseller accts through them (though I’ve never used them as a domain registrar). Perhaps I should have said the only reliable registrars that I’ve personally used are GoDaddy and NetworkSolutions.
As far as the list of accredited registrars goes, I would be willing to bet this is similar to brick and mortar stores for other products – in there are better ones, and there are some more questionable ones. But then again, a lot of this has to do with the appearance of their respective websites.
but this again gets into the nitpicky arguments that are probably better reserved for computer-oriented forums…
I’ll second Bob’s recommendation … if you want free space for a web site, check out Google.
I’ll second the Freewebs idea here is mine.
I never got a popup off of Freewebs.
Our familly owns a domain name, so I would put it on there, but I actually have a blog site instead. White River Southern Railroad It’s free, and adding to it is pretty much exactly like posting here. It’s more limited than a website though…
My internet provider, Bell Sympatico offers me free webspace, maybe yours does as well.
Joe and Dan,
I already have 10MB of FREE web space from my ISP. (Well, FREE because I pay the monthly service for web access. [(-D]) The “template” software is decent but it is limited.
Are there any catches or downsides to FREE web sites provided by Google and others? Thanks.
Tom
You mean other than the dating ad pop up banner at the top of your home page that if you click, activates a whole series of pop ups that you can’t close or get out of without doing a control/alt/delete. Those are nasty!
Trainmanny-So…Lets see this web site of yours so we can judge for ourselves.
generaly just google ads or similar…
That is not a popup in my opinion, as it does not open a seperate window.
Obviously, they’re not offering this free space just out of the generosity of their hearts, there’s a catch. It’s generally that some of your web page will be given over to ads and you can’t do anything about that.
Google at least will let you tailor that so it’s train ads if you want – instead of ads for dating services and stuff like that.
I also believe Google will give you ad-free space as long as your hits per month are low, but the minute your site grows beyond a certain point, they’ll come knocking and ask you to pay. Most personal web sites will never cross that boundary, so this issue will mainly apply to small business sites that start out free.
The Google editor seems to allow for a reasonable amount of rich content editing.
Obviously, the way to have total control is to pay for web hosting. These days, you can get a lot of ad-free web site space for even $3-$4 per month on shared hosting. The other thing that gives you the most control is to go ahead and learn HTML – or find a friend who knows it and is willing to help.
Most do in my experience.
You can get a free blog at wordpress.com/features/ Save learning and editing xhtml and css. A blog about your model railroad would be easiest and cheapest compared to buying hosting and website software.
Thanks,
Rob
Hate to burst your bubble here guy but Host Monster is perhaps the biggest Domain thief out there. Miss or late on a monthly payment and HM will take you domain name and try to sell it. They have done this with several businesses and are involved in a class action lawsuit over it. Also HM is notorious for double billing, and selling your personal info. The Better providers all have clauses that let you keep you domain no matter as long as you renew it yearly/bi yearly etc, and your info is kept private.
Given that in my day job I’m a manager of web developers, and I’ve been in web development since 1993, I can offer some “from the trenches” advice on doing a model railroad web site.
I’ve created an “All about model railroad web site construction” tutorial thread over on my own layout web site forum, in case anyone is interested in that topic.
We have dived into this pool of creating a website as well … though it seems life pulls us away from keeping it as up to date as we would like. But we have used http://www.trainweb.org/ for our site. It felt a good fit and with a family of six, free was always a good selling point. Here is the link to ours … I hope the information helps.
To answer all your questions:
I have Verizon Fios, so I think they offer free web sites, but I like the Google, freewebs and trainweb options.
I am a teenager and already have just enough for trains (yes, cut off all useless auxiliary spending; including websites)
As long as I can post photos and videos without having to pay anything I am fine.
I:5 I would never leave the Forum, I just want to have a link to my site in the signature.
Ah yes the model railroad webpage. I have been working on my page hosted with my ISP for weeks now. It’s purpose is mostly MRR resources. I am working on an electronics tutorial for the site and am compiling what I feel are useful MRR ideas, tips, etc. The site will also have a page to show off what we have accomplished on the layout. It seems like a huge undertaking from where I sit. I sure wsh I knew more about writing html etc. I am using a program called sitespinner to generate the code for me. It’s working pretty well but I have an issue on my main page that I can’t seem to solve.
I’ve got an animated gif of a CP work train that scrolls across the bottom of the page while Flatt & Scruggs wail on the Oragne Blossom Special in the background. The problem is the track that the train “runs” on loads in the wrong location when the page loads. Refresh and it loads correctly. It’s beyond my level of experience. I just don’t get it… [banghead]
