How to install a DCC decoder in a Stewart HO scale F unit
Great video Terry. I have one of those very same locos, I’ll give it a try! Thanks
Very nice video. As a DCC novice I look forward to any other decoder, or sound decoder, or light installtion videos as well as anything to do with DCC troubleshooting.
As always the videos are really well done. BUT WE NEED MORE N SCALE. A decoder install in N scale would be wonderful with all the bells and whistles.
560 ohms to 1.2K ohms should work for the resistor, but it would be good to know what value Terry used. Also, in the popup graphic at the end of the video, “anode” is mis-spelled as “annode”. Rather than soldering the LED in place and having to desolder and switch polarity, I would mechanically secure the LED on the board without solder, test it, then switch or solder it.
Being a real novice, how do you select the size for the resistor for the LED?
Terry, what a wonderful and comfortable presentation good to see the some of the basic dcc installations in live action, and the camera work is fantastic…
Very good video. Learnt some new techniques.
I don’t/can’t disagree with Terry when he says to shorten the wires before you put them into the decoder; however, unless there is a strong reason to clips the wires at that time (other wires in the way after soldering, proximity of other wires after the new wires are in place, or something similar), it makes more sense to trim/clip the wires AFTER soldering them in place. Terry does mention to trim the wires when the soldering is completed, so why add a step that is really unnecessary?
Did you replace the original LED. If so why?
What is so great is the resolution. You can really see what is going on. I like M Ackerman suggestion to clip after soldering. Good idea
Great presentation, Terry. Enjoyed the easy, calm, way you pulled it off.
Hello Stephen,
In this video, Terry is using the original LED from the model. Right at the 2 minute mark, he is shown clipping the LED from the Stewart light board for reuse. Later in the video he solders the LED to the NCE decoder with a 1K ohm resistor.
I hope that answers your question, and thanks for watching MR Video Plus!
David
MR Video Plus is very cool, and so is this video! This is the first time I watch Terry, I really enjoy his way of explaining things. Definitely will solder with flux from now on.
Please keep these vids coming, and David, please use Terry again ![]()
Great video that makes this almost look easy.
Terry was great. Would like to see him in more how-to’s.
I reviewed this again during my installation of Digitrax receivers into my early A-B-A set of Stewart UP F-units. The video helped clarify some points, although I’m not nearly as neat as Terry!. It would be nice to have decoder installtion covered for some older Athearn “Blue Box” or earlier RTR line units also as well as older Kato units. Thanks!
Great video! As you progress through these videos, it would be nice to show the more complicated DCC sound installation. Let’s have more!
Way to go Terry! You made it look easy, and you showed us how to do it with condidence! Thank you!
Terry and David, this was excellent! Can you do a video on cleaning and lubricating older locomotives?
