i may be missing the point of this but what is wrong with the expansion track that is manufactured by Kato? In N-scale it is adjustable from 3 inches to 4.25 inches or something about that size.
The expansion track is good for what it does, but it’s a tad fragile, and the mechanics that make it expandable also make it a potential trouble spot. And there are appearance issues as well. It might be good for a temporary solution, but I think the modification suggested by the OP would be better for a permanent layout.
In my experience, Kato’s track geometry is such that if you include turnouts in the layout, you end up needing a expansion piece. I think the turnouts are not exactly the same length as the standard straight sections.
They look like a road crossing and you may not want that plus an added expense or that look.
They are however great for connecting modules.
