How To Model Railroads of the 1950s

Got the special issue in the mail yesterday. I briefly browsed through it, and it is a winner.

I consider it a companion issue to the Fall 2005 special issue, Modeling Railroads of the 1950s.

The current special issue does a good job of covering the 1950s including the architecture, the vehicles, freight cars, cabooses, passenger trains at their peak, choosing a time frame, and some nice 1950s layouts. Lots of great photos as well.

If you haven’t already subscribed to it, it is worth picking one up at the store.

Just wondering if this is new information or is it a collection of previously published material? Not really opposed to old info being reprinted because, if you model that era, you have it all in 1 place …just curious. jerry

Given that the 50s is probably the most popular era to model, as steam and diesels could still be found side by side, it’s understandable why Kalmbach chose that era as a featured focus. The amount of MRRing stuff available at your fingertips in the era is astounding.

Kalmbach did release a book about modeling in the 50s 2 or 3 years ago, which was probably a compilation of some earlier MR articles plus a few new ones. In like manner, I would also enjoy seeing other railroading eras given some exposure - i.e. Pre-20s, 20s-40s, etc.

Still waiting for mine. I was going to wait until Borders had it but got sucked in when I renewed. Should be good stuff since this is exactly when I model, and as I was not alive then I need to rely on others to get things right.

Dunno.

To me, the stuff is new because I hadn’t seen it before, but who’s to say what is new and what is not.

On the cover, the claim is “ALL NEW advice from the experts”.
