I want a tgv on my layout but the only ones that are in production are in N scale and I model in HO scale.
I have two ideas if you have another please post it or tips on how to do it please post them also.
- put a circle of track ona mountain top
- put a loop of track with a back drop of a city scape and possibly a station in the fascia so it’s not in the layout itself but still it’s a tgv on the layout. Iu would be below the girders but attatched to them for support. only one train will be running so no need for blocks just a dc power pack suitable for N scale use.
The tgv I will be getting will be the orange one made by kato. This will be purchased after a sd90 and an nce power cab with decoders.
I need to redo my expesive items to buy in numerical order list. “Expensive” is stuff over $80. Wich is a good bit of money for a 13 year old like myself.
Well, that is a sizeable budget for a 13-year-old. I remember mowing lawns and doing extra chores so I could get a $25 Bachmann steamer at that age. Wow.
I’m not sure you’re going to end up with a mix of HO and N that will ever really look like anything other than a multi-scale layout. Forced perspective works in only a very limited set of situations. Either one must be satisfied to view a scene from but one of many possible angles, or one must place the smaller scale in some position on the layout (like a far corner) where there is but one angle from which to view.
If you really want the TGV, then you should get it. I just wonder if modifying your current layout to add an N scale loop is going to help you evolve as a model railroader. I understand your age, but at the same time as we mature as modelers most of us tend toward greater realism. Ignoring the awkward scale issues, would a French bullet train look like it belongs on your layout?
A seperate “layout” in N might be the best bet. You may find N is a better fit for you anyway, since you will eventually be headed off on your own in a few years, and space will undoubtedly be at a premium.
Best of luck!
I am planning a circle of N on top of a mountian for forced perspective and to run some of my stuff. It is coming slowly, because it will cost a lot for what I get out of it.
Good point. And no a french bullet train won’t match the area I’m modeling wich is somewhere green wich could be france but more likely germany because of the salt mine and scenery wich has yet to come.
So because of the above factors The fascia idea is the best. Now about the $80 thing that takes a long time to get that much so that’s why I decided $80 or more is expensive. So I think the bullet rain will replace the .22 rifle on the expensive items to buy list. Probably by the time Get the sd90 and dcc I’ll have the fascia waiting to be cut for N scale.
There had been layout built with N and Z together where a forced perspective is utilised with Z runnning in the background making it looks a very large distance than it really is remembering the further something is away, the smaller it gets. It might be harder to mix HO and N though because of the size difference and if you force the perspective too much, it then looks unrealistic. You will need to calculate the distance reuqired for the 2 scales to be in say 45 degrees perspective for it to be ‘in scale’.
