How to remove a broken N Scale King Pin

Okay, yesterday evening I was weathering some N Scale Atlas 2-bay coal hoppers and decided to remove the trucks so I wouldn’t gum up the works. I ran into one particularly stubborn king pin that was really in there. I gingerly pried it up with a screw driver. Then I got the brilliant idea to yank it out with needle-nose pliers - bad idea. The pin broke in half instead of coming out. Half of the pin is still stuck in the chassis and can;t be pushed through from the top. Yep, I’m an idiot[:S].

My question is how do nI get this pin out? Drilling and using an Easy Out is the only thing I can think of.

You can get replacement king pins. Redrill the hole, same size as previously hole (use hole for other truck as a guide). How deep is the other hole? Drill the same depth. Put in a new pin.

Good luck,

Richard

Or you can drill and tap the hole for a similar sized screw. (Kadee has various sizes of drills and tap sets).

Hi GP,

Been there, did it ,(once) get the depth from other sochet and using a drill slighty smaller take out as much as you can leaving just a bit the inside. I then quatered it carefully with a scalpel and got the rest out. It got replaced with a KD pin that needed squashing a bit oval to grip, did me ok.

Be in touch.

On my N scale cars I would remove the shell. Many times the hole for the kingpin would show and then I could just push it out from the deck end. If no hole then you will have drill out one.

Worked most every times. Other wise it you can not do it through the deck then you do have to drill from the bottom through the pin.

Thanks for your help everybody. I drilled it out last night. Took me longer to put the bit in the Dremmel than it did to drill the pin out.
