how to remove the shell on an HO Kato NW2

i want to remove the cab and body shell on an HO Kato NW2 so I can paint it. I have removed the cab and coupler boxes and Floor board retainer clips they are mounted to. I want to remove the body shell and frame .I am not sure where to proceed from there . Anyone have experience or suggestions?

Ron,

Yep, they’re tricky. In fact, Kato has a webpage link that gives directions:

http://katousa.com/consumers/HO-NW2-Bodyshell-removal.html

Only problem is you can’t find it on their site map, but Google is your friend!

Thank you Mike just what I was looking for! I did check Kato`s web site and did not see a link. I never thought to google because of the very obscure subject matter. Now I will have an HO B&M NW2 ,about time, I bought the engine better than 30 years ago.

Ron,

Glad I could help. It seems a bit scary the first time, like you’re going to rip it apart – and that’s essentially what you do! [:O]

Be cautious, as noted in the various disclaimers in the instructions, but it works OK. Note that you can file on the retaining nipples to make it easier the next time. I’ve had some practice with this procedure, as I convert the Kato loco into a HOn3 narrowgauge model that I call the NW2M:

First time it feels lile it will never loosen up. I filed the dimples off completely and made the shell a slip fit.
