What does a person use to take lettering off of a steam locomotive tender?

I have used an eraser and 000 steel wool --Steel wool is faster but if you go too hard you also lift the paint

I would stick to the eraser. It takes a little patience, but it works very well.

A little liquid dishwashing soap helps with the eraser.

I’ve had good luck with non-acetone nail polish remover for removing decals and lettering from many cars.
