How to tell if your liuonel smoke unit is running backwards?

Some of my lionel engines put out good smoke, and some don’t. If I take off the shell how can I tell if the fan is turning backwards? A lso does anyone have a list of the affected engines and models. I would say roughly 1/3 of my engines exhibit this problem.

The fan should be rotating clockwise.
