How vintage could a Dash 9 be?

I know a guy who has a Athearn BB Dash 9 in the neat looking GE demo scheme, and he describes it as being vintage. Through some research, I’ve found that the Dash 9 was produced to meet eco standards of the govt. in 2005, so that would mean this loco couldn’t really be vintage… the owner has just got the loco and figured it to be vintage seeing as the misconception of BB’s no longer being made. Am I right? TIA!

Not sure if 1993 is considered vintage. The first -9 was delivered to the CSX in 1993.

Well I don’t consider 1993 to be vintage at all. Thanks for the reply. I don’t figure that the seller knows when it was actually made, and I’d rather it not be too vintage. Thanks again.

A wine can be “vintage” 2003. I thought the word only refered to the year something was made.

Definition for vintage: Pronunciation: 'vin-tij
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, probably alteration of vendage, from Anglo-French vendage, vendenge, from Latin vindemia grape-gathering, vintage, from vinum wine, grapes + demere to take off, from de- + emere to take
1 a (1) : a season’s yield of grapes or wine from a vineyard (2) : wine; especially : a usually superior wine all or most of which comes from a single year b : a collection of contemporaneous and similar persons or things :
2 : the act or time of harvesting grapes or making wine
3 a : a period of origin or manufacture <a piano of 1845 vintage> b : length of existence :

1 of wine : of, relating to, or produced in a particular vintage
2 : of old, recognized, and enduring interest, importance, or quality : classic
3 a : dating from the past : old, old fashioned

Hope this helps!

So all of this definition means that a dash 9 is a wino? [%-)]

I think you can call anything vintage if you list it on eBay.

eBay is a place one can find anything vintage, new, used, working, and anything else that the person wishes to describe there item as. I just wanted to know when the first Dash 9’s was made. Thanks

A Dash 9 could not be considered “vintage” in the current vernacular use of the word. However, an Athearn BB Dash 9 could argueably be called “vintage” as it represents one of the last locomotive models that Athearn introduced using it’s traditional construction methods, i.e.: sintered wheels, metal handrails and stanchions, metal electrical contact strip.

Indeed.I’ve seen COMMON Athearn BB car kits listed as “Vintage”.Only those that are new to the hobby, the gullible or those to lame (sorry) to check Athearn’s web page or any of the better on line shops to see what is readily available.[:(]

I still can’t get over the shock when a COMMON BB CN boxcar went for $24.00(25.00?) plus shipping.I can’t help but wonder what that poor soul thought when he saw $6.50 on the box when he visited a hobby shop or went to a train show.

Vintage = High Dollar Potential

At least in the mind of the “I don’t know much about trains” seller.

In the Oscale section of Ebay vintage means: hope you are a craftsman because this thing needs lots of repairs.
