How would the Virginian & Ohio fair in today's business climate?

I think that the Appalachian Lines would have merged its three railroads (AM, V&O, VM) into one, abandoning a number of coal branches in the process and focusing more on intermodal business. Ultimately, they would have found it difficult to go it alone against CSX and NS resulting in the sale of some lines while the remaining core is purchased by a short-line conglomerate.
