How you MOW guys dealing with the heat?

Ya its been cooking. How are you guys dealing with it? Any buckling rail issues? How about the shop guys? About the worst thing a mechanic can hear from a driver in this weather is his A/C is not blowing cold enough. I tell them at least you have A/C. It is absolutely miserable in the shop. The heat and humidity along with the heat from the equipment I am working on is brutal. Draws the life right out of me.

Hope all is well with you.

Pete:

Just a personal observation from watching MOW crews work in this area. Many of the Track maint machines on the BNSF seem to have Keysor style A/C units mounted. Of course the guys on the smaller machines,[ I guess they just suffer with the heat and breaks when they can] don’t have ca=bs to cool. Recently got a chance to see some of the MOW work going on on the OKT div of the UP { recently finished a big rehab project from Wichita south, to the Caldwell, Ks. area. Was the same way A/C units on all the machines with cabs.

A few years back BNSF did a major maintenance rehab on the Thayer Sub and they had a SCHWAN’s Refrigerated truck on the job each day- loaded with ice, and plenty of cold, frozen goodies for their MOW guys to fight the heat.

I guess eveyone has their own ideas about staying a little cool in this weather. Last several days i n South Central Kansas, the heat index has been back and fourth in the 100 degree to 110 degree range. Read: miserable in the afternoons.

Spoke with a track foreman I know here in Michigan the other day. The heat has been taking it’s toll on him and his crew. He said at the end of their day all they want is a cool shower, and a light meal,

The heat index is relative to what you are used to and comfortable with. In Michigan, anything over 90 gets oppressive. I’m aware that there are places that get much higher, but for us…
