HSR $100M Placeholder

Bloomberg is reporting (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-09-21/high-speed-rail-life-support-said-to-be-in-senators-proposal.html?cmpid=yhoo) that three senators have reallocated ONLY $100M from existing earmarked funds to “placehold” HSR rather than let the Senate Appropriations Committee entirely eliminate HSR, as desired by President Obama’s $8B request.

Heated the link up for Ya![tup][8-|]

Quote from the Linked article:

FTA:"…Senators Dick Durbin of Illinois, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Dianne Feinstein of California and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, all Democrats like Obama, proposed reallocating funds earmarked for highway and transit projects at the Senate Appropriations Committee meeting today. The amendment was adopted by voice vote, John Bray, a committee spokesman, said in an e-mail.

Further, FTA:“…****Most of the money has gone to increasing train speeds on existing passenger routes, including $1.1 billion for Illinois to provide 110 mile-per-hour service between Chicago and St. Louis. California, overseeing the only project to build a rail corridor dedicated to high-speed trains, has been awarded $3.5 billion from the program…”

Wonder how UP feels about the possibility of diversion of those moneys, earmarked for use on the

Thank you, Sam, for “heating up” the URL for the Bloomberg post regarding the $100M “placeholder.” If you (or someone else) would be so kind: How can I add a hypertexted URL directly in a forum thread post? I apologize if this question is sort of OT. Also: Sam, I hope that all of us have given you some encouraging comments regarding the Parlour Car on the COAST STARLIGHT. In fact, I will be aboard that train myself in February 2012.

I can do that by "copy-and paste’ the URL, then just hit the space bar once after it, and that seems to do it (but that procedure may not be universal). I think adding the space is a good idea anyway to prveent another word or symbol from accidentally being ‘attached’ to the URL.

Having just seen an excellent technical presentation on the CHI-STL route upgrade, I doubt if the $100MM will be coming out of UP’s ‘middle’ segments of that route, which will be finished later this year. Instead, it will be upgrading the ends that are vulnerable to that diversion of funds - the TRRA’s portion at the south, and from Joliet into CHI, if I recall correctly.
