[?] Okay all you history majors, here’s a good one for you. I recently decided to build my HO layout around the AT&SF in the 40’s to early 60’s era. Did the Santa Fe ever utilize Hudsons during that period, and if so, what was the road number range? I want to be authentic as possible but a NYC J1e Hudson is definetly out of place. I can re-decal the tender to make it work IF they had 'em.

Streamlined Hudson built 1937 by Baldwin with 84" drivers numbered 3460 nicknamed Blue Goose. Santa Fe had fifteen others non streamlined built at same time. Built to haul the streamlined CHIEF and heavyweight SCOUT and othere east of Raton Pass One word to describe the Santa Fe Hudsons “Magnificent”. They were the only 84" drivered Hudsons built and could easily maintain 100 mph with a sixteen car heavyweight train across Kansas and Missouri. Don’t know if anyone ever built a Santa Fe Hudson in anything but brass but they were something to see.

passengerfan, there are some Milwaukee fans out there who might well dispute your assertion about 84"-drivered Hudsons (admittedly MILW people might have called their F-7s “Baltics”, but the principle is the same). Likewise C&NW. B&O had one (class V-2), which admittedly was more an experimental locomotive than an operating class – but undeniably a 4-6-4 with 84" drivers…
