We’ve seen the GEVO/aka GE’s hybrid design. Where is EMDs? I have a hard time believing that EMD would “let” GE have that market.
GE only has an experimental one, dont they? somewhere on the UP right now i think. EMD must still be designing theirs. no way will they let GE outdo them
How is the GEVO experimental? There are already lots rolling and more orders in, aren’t there?
It’s not the GEVO that’s experimental, it’s the GE hybrid unit - the one that sends DB power into batteries instead of resistors. And yes, I believe there is only one at this time. It was rebuilt out of an AC4400CW.
Designing a hybrid of anykind takes MONEY yes EMD does have some with its new owners however are they willing to spend it to devolp something that take 30 years to recoup the cost to devolp it. For GE they already had the Battery technology and the desire to do it with a CEO pushing for Ecofriendly projects. Trucking execs what the same thing but they can not get one due to weight issues a hybrid will be 3K heavier for a semi truck. Wal-Mart is pushing for one of course since but they are the exception they have their own fleet and do not really care about the weight issue.
i’m also pretty sure if EMD makes a hybrid, it will more than likely be another addition to the SD70 series. the SD70 series diesels seem to be the most successful sellers of EMD since the SD40 series.
but i’m just guessing
I knew I should have paid more attention to some other threads. OOPS! Thanks for correcting me.
I also agree with Atmo that it (EMD’s version) will probably be based off of the SD70 series.
I wonder at the same thing. That is an excellent question. I am sure that if EMD doesn’t have one yet, they will soon. I wonder if GM divesting itself with EMD has something to do with it. Any news on that? I don’t always have time to keep up with the latest. As to the whole “Green” thing, I am not sure everyone buys into it (I think Global Warming is a natural cycle that man has little to do with) and I am not sure they will ever convert totally to “hybrid” locomotives. I have yet to see one here on the UP. I see a lot of dash 9 and SD-70’s and 45’s on the subdivision here.
