I am looking for ideas and inspiration with.....

…replacing walthers’ out of production paper mill kit with smaller individual buildings. I am planning a HO scale layout that will feature a coal mine, an oil distributor, a farm co-op and a paper mill as its major industries. I have been able to find kits for all of the industries listed (from different manufacturers), except for the paper mill. I am not neccessarily looking for a “Paper Mill kit” but different smaller kits that could represent one.

I am wondering if anyone else out there “made do” with smaller kits that represented a larger industry? What did you do and how did you make up the industry from smaller parts??

I don’t know about using it for a paper mill, but you get get a lot of bang for buck with this kit.

You don’t have to use it as all one complex.

Depends on what you mean by a “paper mill”. By your tag line I wll assume you are modeling the east coast. Just about any 2-4 story brick or stone mill building would work well for a 'paper mill". A real common type of “paper mill” in the areas surrounding Philadelphia was one that made corrugated boxes. They were all over the place. They recieved boxcars of brown paper and shipped boxcars of cardboard boxes and drums.

RDA makes some nice stone buildings, search for “RDA kit” on e-bay, you can usuually get a discount.

Thanks to you both for replying. As much as I have read these forums I cannot believe that I did not explain myself further about what I intend to model…so here it goes!

I already mentioned that I model HO scale, but what I envision is a facility that takes in pulpwood along with chemicals and maybe coal (boiler fuel?) and outputs various paper products (writing pads, cardboard products, typwriter paper etc etc) The time frame is between 1945-1955. I love the transition period and the Pennsy ran her larger steam locomotives west - in general. I want to model the area of western PA and eastern OH. The Pennsy is my favorite RR, but others will appear on the pike as well - NKP, C&O, ERIE, and yes even the NYC. In any case I hope that this description helps define what I am looking for.

Lothar - that complex does give you allot of bang for your buck…I like it and probably will work it into my scheme.

Dehusman - The RDA Kits that you suggested are a pleasant suprise to me. (this is the first that I have heard of that manufacturer). Thanks for the tip!

If anyone else finds this interesting, please keep your suggestions comming! I would really appreciate more ideas…thanks
