I am on the hunt for a rather interesting little brass engine. Has anyone seen or have a westside ATSF fireless cooker? i can’t find on anywhere, but i know there out there… Thanks for any help.
I can’t recall seeing one lately, but here’s some tips that are hopefully useful to you.
Try ebay (be patient),Don Black Brass Trains, Gunning, Caboose Hobbies,Brass Trains online(?) I think that’s the name for Dan’s Train Depot(or try Piermont), Mitchell’s, they might have what you’re after or can give you an idea on prices, availabilty, etc.I’ve dealt with Don Black,Mitchell’s and Dan’s Train Depot so I can recommend them, the others have good reputations as far as I’m aware, all have extensive lists at their websites (often including photos).
I would recommend a little research before you hit ebay as to prices, what manufacturers made them, etc.
General shopping tips for buying brass:
If you can check it out in person do it, the price in gas will be much cheaper than trying to resurrect a disaster, always try to buy the most complete or best condition model you can a “fixer upper” will often cost several times more to repair than paying a little bit more for a good one in the first place. The majority of steam locomotives were custom built for a particular railroad’s needs or biases so finding specific parts for an oddball locomotive can be expensive, time consuming and prohibitvely expensive. Look at any photo’s very carefully (it is amazing what you can hide in a photo),if you have any question(s) ask the seller if you don’t like the answer don’t be afraid to move on and look for another model, remember a little patience can save you money and aggravation.
Not the specific answer you’re after, but I hope it helps. Good luck and happy hunting!

The ATSF #2229 switcher was a run of just 300 units, way back in 1979. However, most total production runs of ATSF brass locos were counted in the thousands. So, perhaps it isn’t very surprising that the switcher seems to turn up on the secondhand market very rarely, as you’ve noticed (the #2228 is even more rare). The best advice I can offer is what has already been said: keep perusing eBay and the major brass dealers and one will eventually turn up.

Gee, about a month ago an HO brass model of the ATSF fireless switcher (0-6-0) was listed on ebay. I think it sold in the $300 or $400 range. Keep looking and one will probably, eventually show up again.
