I don't get it!!!

I’ve tried 3 times to upload a photo to Rail Pictures.net, and it says the image is too wide bigger than 1024 pixels. How do I fix this without messing up my photo?

You’ll need an image editing program. If you have one, resize the image, don’t crop.

Ok thanks Larry, IDK if I have one, but I will look.

First copy the image. Don’t make any changes to the original, only to the copy.

Photobucket will resize the image during the upload.

I use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for editing my photos, and you can set the image dimensions during the export process. But I seriously doubt you have that…It’s typically used by professional photographers and serious hobbyists only.

All Windows computers (if you don’t have a Mac, you probably have a Windows computer) come with Microsoft Paint. Open up your photo in it, then go into Image → Resize/Skew and type in 1000 pixels as the longer of the two dimensions. The other dimension should change as well to keep the image at the right ratio. Save the photo as a copy (I use the original name and add a -2 at the end) and then try it then.

Good luck!

Using MS Paint will ruin your picture.

Let’s see the two best photos you have, no offense, but I get the feeling that you’re not at RP quality yet.

A lot of people on RP ain’t RP quality. My personal (favorite) are people that super-saturate photos. I’ve never seen an engine glow in the dark yet, but looking at RP, I wonder at times. Translation - don’t use RP as a measure of talent. PS.- a simple free editor is called xnview. A google search will find you the download site.

I don’t understand digital photography at all, but that does explain something I’ve noticed on RP a number of times. Many pictures look like they were prepared by Madison Avenue types to be used in magazine ads. They simply don’t look real to me at times. Thank you for explaining that.

I don’t think this thread is a place to find fans of my work [B)]

Agreed. I like my photos colorful, but not glowing!

A complaint I’ve seen here numerous times about the “juried” photo sites is that nobody seems to be able to figure out exactly what the rules are. For every picture of yours they’ve rejected you can find ten that were apparently accepted that are the same as yours, or worse.

About the only choices you have are to find sites that don’t require acceptance by some internal authority (perhaps even starting your own, if you’ve got the ability to create sites and can afford the space on a server), or play by their rules - which apparently sometimes include being barred from submitting for some period of time once you’ve been rejected.

I suspect that once you gain a reputation on such sites for acceptable work, the bar may be lowered somewhat for you, which probably explains the “sub-standard” pictures you’ll find on them.

I like some of your work!![bow][swg]

It’s just like any “Juried” artshows. There are, sometimes, certain regulations that are not really clear, nor, from some of my wife’s experiences, totally based on your work. I seen a lot of supersaturated photos on RP and other sites for example and, of course, tried the same trick only to get refused. I do think that it can be a little more than just how the pic looks—it could be that one of the judges just had a bad day and took it out on someone else is all----

But then again----[sigh][:-^]

I don’t mind the “juried” sites that much… I belong to both RP and Railroad Picture Archives.NET and I use them for different uses. RRPA is my photo “dump” page where I put all the best from each trip. RP is where the best-of-the-best go, and so far I have a grand total of ONE photo there!

I think their standards have made me a much better photographer than when I started. It really helps to assume they’ll reject your photos though. After 20 or so of my photos had been rejected (over the course of many months) it didn’t hurt when yet another one was rejected. Then you feel really good when one gets in! [8D]

As far as “Photoshop” type programs go, I have been using GIMP (Gnutella Image Manipulation Program) for the last 2 or 3 years. It has all of the features of PS without the PS price tag. GIMP is FREE, and is updated constantly. It’s fairly easy to use, and is pretty feature rich.

Another free program is Paint.net. It’s not as robust an editing program as GIMP but it does do the job. I use Paint.net for quick photo touch ups, and GIMP for editing.

Do a Google search for both products.

Sorry guys,

I’ve tried everythng, and it won’t work. Paint just made my image a big distorted blob. It only goes to 500 anyhow.

Huhhh…[sigh]

That’s all you need.

wow! Thanks! Now all I need to do is learn how to use it…

Trainboy,

Thank you very much for the link. I didn’t need the photo software, it’s just that I hadn’t thought of Tucows since back in the twentieth century. Now I’m going to have to set out some time to look over all their offerings.

Did you happen to see the FM units at Nelson on the Photo of the Week on the TRAINS homepage?
