Several years ago I put a new heating system in my house. When I did this I was able to locate the new boiler into the utility room in my basement. This freed up a lot of space in the layout room. The problem was I still had the chimney in there. I have been planning on taking it out since then and even removed it where it went thru the roof two years ago. This week my wife cleaned out the linen closet on the main floor so I would have access to it thru there. Her motivation is that she will gain almost twice as much space for a close as she originaly had. Below are pictures of what the layout area looked like before and after I removed it. Surprisingly it only took about 4 hours to do this. The good news is no blood was shed and no damage was incured on the layout.

Very good! Do you plan to make any changes or additons to the layout since having the obstruction out of the way?
Awesome! More layout room!
No changes, at least not right away. The removal was done to eliminate a tight spot between it and the center peninsula on the layout. The “squeeze thru” was pretty tight (center right of the first picture). In fact, I had a rule about going thru it when there was a train on the outer track in that area. Due to the tight gap I was never able to add scenery to the edge area as the track was right on the edge and a train could get knocked off pretty easy. It also made for easier access to the small yard seen in the pictures.
Of course Santa will now have to use the front door.

Yeah, but he can fit bigger engines in the front door.
Monumental task you’ve just accomplished. Next I suppose you’re going to tell us you did it with your Dremel. [:D]
When we bought our house, it a chimney going up through the upstairs planned layout room. It was soon removed and a skylight window put in place. There was a lot of brick used for the garden paths.
