I Finally found this car

I have been looking for this car for a long time. It is from the original Atlas 1960’s N scale cars. It is used to carry acrylonitrile which is a very nasty compound used to make plastics.

Congratulations on a successful hunt and obtaining the “trophy”.[tup]

Tis a good feeling in obtaining a long sought after car or locomotive.[tup]

I have had a couple of those eureka moments myself while at train shows. Congratulations.[<:o)][<:o)]

Well done! Congratulations.

If that stuff is as nasty as your post indicates, make sure that the car has appropriate placards and follow appropriate hazmat rules in handling.

I’m still looking for that elusive “white whale” car of mine… A while back, I saw one for the first time for sale at a train show. I thought, “That’s a really nice looking car!” but I thought the price was too high so I put it down. I kept thinking about it, and even came back a couple of times, but when I eventually decided to buy, I went back and it was gone! Now I’m kicking myself for not buying it when I had the chance, because I realized after all, the price wasn’t that bad. The worst part was, I actually had it in my hands! … but alas, it got away. “Never again,” I told myself. Now I must find that car (at a reasonable price, of course) to make things right with the world.

The search for the white whale continues…

Maybe you should change your screen name to AHAB, thar she blows! [swg]

Don:

I have all of them and I see those big 96 Ft whale belly cars at the Timonium Md show all the time. Thee is one coming up later this month.

Acrylonitrile will undergo plymerization and generate heat if not inhibited, or if it comes in contact with acids, alikyines, amines, oxidizers or bromines as well if there is a fire which will heat it it will undergo polmerization.and it can explode. It will release hydrogen cyanide gas and oxides of nitrates in its smoke. It is listed as a class B carcinogen. The two placards for it are Flammable Liquid and Poison. It is VERY NASTY STUFF.

And it helps to remember just what happened to Ahab when he found his white whale …

Dave Nelson

Ahab said. "I’ll chase him round Good Hope,

and round the Horn,

and round the Norway Maelstrom,

and round perdition’s flames before I give him up!"

Kahn said. "I’ll chase him round the moons of Nibia,

and round the Antares maelstrom,

and round perdition’s flames before I give him up!"

Stokes said. "I’ll chase him through the aisleways,

and round the layouts,

and round the strollers,

and through the firebox flames before I give it up!"

Hee-hee!.. I don’t know if getting my hands on that sought-after car will lead to an Ahab-like demise, but maybe more like the dog that finally caught the car and was like, “Yes, it’s finally mine!.. Now what the heck do I do with this thing?” [:D]

Well in my cast it will moving the acrylonitrile to the plastics manufacturer and hope I don’t do the same thing that MMA did. That would really cause a major disaster.
