I got a call from the LHS a couple days ago that some more of the Broadway Limited California Zepher cars I ordered were in. Normally when the cars one orders come in, it means that there are others (which were not ordered) sitting on the shelf. So today I bopped down there and sure enough there it was. Not supposed to be delivered until February. More enchanting than all the red rider BB guns in Christmas display windows. …
A beaver tail dome observation car in all its stainless steel glory. The “Silver Sky” no less sitting right in the middle of the display.
I picked it up and proceeded to the counter to get the two they had called me for. And then it happened. After I got my other two cars, I said, (don’t say it – don’t say it – but I did) “I want to cancel my order for the ‘Silver Sky’ I’ll just take this one off the display.” He gave me the funniest look and then said, “oh yours is probably in the back too, let me go check.” So he took my “Silver Sky” and went into the back room to check. And that was the last I saw of that wonderful car. It was not supposed to be on the shelf, it was a unit that someone else had ordered and had come out with all the "Silver Mustang"s that were supposed to be on the shelf. Mine won’t be in, for probably forever, I ordered too late. I should have just taken it up and bought it, THEN called back to cancel my order. Of course that probably wouldn’t have worked either since it did not have an SKU price sticker on it. So up front it would have probably flagged anyway.
Oh Well, at least some other model railroader is happy today.
The “Silver Sky” is special because it is one of the real (twelve inches to a foot scale) ones that I could have purchased back in 1983 for $6000. One of the biggest regrets of my entire railroading experience…
