It’s been 7 years since my last and simple DCC install. Going through locos, and with a bit of courage I’ve been working on a SHS/Orient Brass GP-7 from Dad’s estate. It has a Taneda 12v dual shaft Round can motor: 9mm shafts, 3 cm long, 2 cm high, 2 cm wide. It is “vertically” mounted, screwed into two brass plates in the middle of the frame. It has a stock brass to soft plastic socket and drive shaft combination. It runs, has sound, but runs and stalls, runs and stalls . . . I installed a Digitrax SDX 167D. Is there a replacement motor that agrees with DCC that you can suggest, perhaps the gear tower in the trucks as well? Do I need a replacement motor? Should I put it back to DC and sell it??? Sounds more like pickup issues rather than the can motor. I would check that first before replacing the motor. Sometimes debris gets between the pickup and the metal wheel.
Make sure that your motor is also isolated from the metal frame. Otherwise, you might let the magic smoke out of your decoder if the locomotive shorts.
How did it run on DC? Did you measure amperage draw from the locomotive first? Are the flex shafts still soft or did they turn hard as rocks with age? Clean wheels and track?
Most brass diesels are terrible. Unless you really want this model for personal reasons, I would buy a plastic GP7 with DCC and be happy. It will look and run much better.
