So I have to go away for a few days for work next weekend, so I was prepping a few kits to take with me to build, like usual. Well, I need 16 P2K wheelsets to equip the 4 cars I want to take. Somehow my parts box has - 15! UGGGH!
Placed emergency order with MB Klein but I’m not expecting it before noon Saturday so I guess I will have a car missing a wheelset til I get back.
I’m still trying to figure out how I got an odd number in the first place.
That always sucks, and I’ve had that one happen twice before.
Once with a 100 pack of branchline 36" semi-scales that had 97 in the bag. I managed to write the manufactuer to get the 3 missing wheelsets and they sent them, although the wrong type (RP25). Contacted them again about that, and got 3 semi-scales and found 2 of the others semi-scales in the same day. So I have one car with 1 semi-scale wheelset and three RP25, and 3 semi-scales on the bench (semi scales don’t seem to like the turnouts I have).
The other one should have had a twilight zone theme. When I first got serious about the hobby, about 4 years ago, I bought a pair of P2K trucks. At the time my brother was being the usual 12 year-old when getting a hold of his older brothers’s stuff. So he cut 3 of the 4 axles. Fast-foward to about 5 months ago, when I bought a covered hopper advertiesed as having metal wheels. When it arrived, it had 3 metal and 1 plastic. A dig through the parts box found the 1 wheelset that my brother didn’t cut a few years back…
The same happened to me a while back but it was 2 axles missing. After contemplating on what could have happened to them it dawned on me. Looking at my scale test car at the now found axles. You probably used it for a replacement for a wobbler and forgot. It happens when we get older. One of the first things to go is the mind. I miss mine more than I miss my brown hair that has weathered white. At least I don’t get carded at the package store any more.[swg]
Randy,During our club’s open houses or the 8 day county fair we usually talk or pull maintenance on our equipment.I don’t recollect anybody building a kit during those times.
I betcha you use that wheel set to replace a bad set and plum forgot using it…I usually come up with a odd number of KD couplers from time to time.[:O]
All plausible EXCEPT: right now I don’t have enough track down to run anything, so when I build a kit it gets checked for coupler height and weight and then goes back in the box to awit the time when it will get to run.
As for the package being short, well, they come in 12 packs and it would be extremely obvious if one of them was missing an axle or two.
There is a happy ending, in my portable parts box I found not one but TWO more wheelsets. So the kit in question has the correct number of wheels now, but what I’m actually missing are THREE axles. I suspect that back when the wheels bin in my parts box was flush and full with plenty, I just grabbed a handful without counting to throw in some kits I was taking along. Although I did dig through and check all the kits I’ve built on the road and managed to only find the enxtra Kadee #5 centerning springs I threw in, and a few extra pennies (I CA pennies in closed cars for extra weight, cheaper than specail ‘car weights’).
