I was sitting around and thinking of where I’d like to take an HO layout too and then it hit me like some old lady threw a pie in my face.
I could see this layout forming in my head, it would take place under the ocean surface, my tracks would be laid on the sea bed, I could detail the bed with all kinds of colorful sea plants, coral cities and all kinds of plastic replica fish, shells and sharks suspended from monofiliment invisable as they are hug from the plexi glass top that is poured to look like ocean waves.
My train loco would be modeled after Captian Nemos sub and the cars will match the same spiky metal and rivet design as the sub, have a giant octopuss moving in on it, heck I could model a small cloth baloon that dances when a tiny computer fan forces air through it and out the tips of his tenticals, that would be wild.
I’d have the “Sea Train” routed throuh sand castle cities and even have the royal “Sea monkey” Garrison standing guard all over it , I’ll have to order them out of back of an old comic book I guess…LOL!, It’s late and I’m getting silly.
“Before I get swamped with PMs and emails asking me how I’m going to keep the trains dry”…
++++++++++++++++++++NO REAL WATER will be used+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“I do like letting my mind run wild”,“it’s catching it afterwards that has always been the problem”.
AAaahhh, off to dream of trains, I’ll give my “Atlantis” layout some more thought tomorrow.
Could use Gerbil/Mouse tubing and exercise balls if you wanted to make an underwater city. They look like bubbles and whatnot that may surround buildings. It’d be pretty neat to see how you’d pull it off! [tup]
Ah Red, you been up late watching Spounge Bob Sqaure Pants again?
(for those of you with out kids in the last 15 years, famous cartoon of some crazy characters that live under the sea. My 8 year old “forces” me to watch.)
Scot, That is a riot, and great pics, Now I don’t feel so crazy, I guess it is true, everything has all ready been thought of in model rail roading…wait, I have another vision…a wagon train TRAIN, one with my plastic warrior brothers surrounding it, ah, never mind.
And for those who would like to know, yes, I did find a leak in my glue tube this morning, the fumes are what have driven me too this, and here I thought it was a lack of sleep.
As for Sponge Bob pants, I watch him, well only because my wife does, she claims she is screening the cartoon for the kids, but EVERY show must be screened???
I do know this much, a *pineapple under the sea would not last that long (*See referance to the cartoons opening song) , well in about an hour I head home from the Emt base and will be happy with my excited greeting from my Jack Russell Terrorist and the good morning kiss from the Mrs and then off to play with trains.
I really should start work on my Ambulance train car…hummm and my slogan could be…“The Ambulance train, saving one Hobo at a time”!!!
How about an N-scale (or even better, Z-scale) layout the size of an aquarium. Then get a glass-bottomed tank and mount it above the layout. It will look like the trains are running on the “sea floor,” with the fish swimming above them.
It’s a very unique idea, I’ll give you that. And it does sounds very interesting even if not practical. Hey, why not…doesn’t the saying go…Dream it, plan it, build it???
Actually, Red Horse*, you could probably pick up an old aquarium at a yard sale, and start from there. There are a lot of aquarium style cars, and subs on flatcars, and of course the Sponge Bob set…buuuuuut, you would have to switch to the* DARK SIDE…3 rail!
…and I prefer my mushrooms sauteed with a nice broiled steak…[:P][(-D]
Jess, You’re not the only one with a “different” thought process [:-^] A year or two - or more - ago, when Dungeons & Dragons was popular, I was developing quite a figure collection, and thought about a “King Arthur” type railroad. That would make for an interesting looking loco & rolling stock!! Scenery would be castles, peasant hovels, and we can’t forget dragons and dungeons!! I still have the figures - hmmmmmmmmm[:P]
I don’t know how long ago it was, but I remember seeing a layout based on Middle Earth from the Lord of the Rings trilogy in one of model railroad magazines. I remember the author even claimed that all of the figures on that layout were hobbits.
So why not a King Arthur type railroad?
I’ve often talked about a Nascar themed railroad with my two Nascar addict sons. It would feature locomotives and cars painted for various drivers and their rides. [:D]
Ivanhen - actually, your idea would not be inconceivable in today’s railroading scene. The Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville sets up not too far from former PRR trackage to Southern Maryland. No reason you couldn’t put up your own “festival” trackside on your own pike.
Jess - Don’t forget to add the LAWYERS ON HANDCAR to follow that ambo train.[;)][tup]
This reminds me of the Model Railroader April Fool’s joke subway layout a few years ago where you had your trains running underground inside PVC water pipe and manhole covers on the surface periodically blowing out clouds of dust to simulate a train passing underneath.
