I named my dog after a steam engine... And got away with it!

I know, not your typical post but one I thought I’d share anyway. Several weeks ago my sister and law told me about a litter of Great Pyrenees/Burnese Mountain Dog mix pups up for adoption. I took a look and fell in love with them. I put my name in for one and sure enough got the last one of the breed. So what was I going to call her???

After looking at pictures of her mom and dad I realized this this was going to be a Brute! But brute wasn’t a suitable name but at the same time the image of an Allegheny hauling a coal train popped into my head. I then thought ya like my dear wife would let me get away with that one! Then again would she know what the name referred to?!? After all my passion for Steam engines or MR’ng was not a shared one.

Before we got the pup I we discussed names and yes I did mention Allegheny as a possibility, to which she responded “Allie” for short? to which I replied “sure”. Little about names was talked about until she arrived and thinking Allie wouldn’t fly and after tossing several other names about my wife kept on prodding me with Allie, to which I finally agreed to.

And here she is!

Funny thing is… My Dear wife knew exactly what an Allegheny was!

I like it, Fergie! [tup] Cute pup, too.

Cute pup!

I once had a friend that had 2 black labs, Mikado and Shay

I had a Maine Coon cat name Cinders, actually her registered name was “Cinders from the ashpan of the 734”[swg]

Allegheny is a great name! Go with it!

“Bowser” would have been appropriate.

Nice dog!

You’ve combined two of my greatest loves, dogs and trains. Well done!!!

Here’s looking at you, kid!

[:-^]

Fergie,

You have incoporated my two great loves as well.

Please keep the pics coming as he matures.

Absolutely a gorgeous dog. I wouldn’t have been able to walk away either.

Johnboy out…

That is a good name, better than my choice of 2-8-8-2 .

Congrats on the new horse, err dog. Or maybe bear. The good new, no one will dare steal your trains with her on guard duty. The bad news, she can swallow an Allegheny in one gulp. Or will when she’s full grown. Great dogs, just HUGE.

Hmm

I also named “something” after a steam loco!

I have been on here with the screenname “galaxy” {short for galaxytimekeeper} for so long and BEFORE I used a steam engine’s name, that I haven’t changed it.

Buty when I went to Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is Strasburg, PA, I feel in love with a giant 4-8-2 PRR “mountain” steamer type loco with long distance tender, numbered #6755!

While searching for a newer screenname that wasn’t already in use, {which I no longer use, but MOh keeps for posterity}, MOH suggested the loco I fell in love with, so that screen name became "mountain6755’.

Strange but True!

I COULD be known as “mountain6755” on here! {But then I’d have to start all over with things here, so I don’t}.

I woldn’t discount it! after all “Mallet” would be a nice boy dog name…

I have a daughter named Ashley and a son named Andrew. It was well after their being named that I learned of the railroad “Ashley, Drew and Northern”.

Imagine my wife’s response when I told her that if there was a third, he/she had to be named Northern!

Not railroady but I named a dog sport short for sports car because she had four on the floor.

I name my cats after railroads. Over the years I’ve had Pennsy, Miss Katy, Santa Fe, and my latest, Frisco. My list of future cat names include Burlington, Quincy, Rocky, Nicky (for Nickel Plate), Espee, and of course Chessie.

I didn’t name my brother’s dog after a railroad, but I did give him a stretch of track calling it the Murrey Route. His real name is Stretch I believe when we got him in 2012. The Murrey Route came about 2 months after walking the same route everyday and decided to name our walks no matter what route we take.

Before my daughter was born, we’d shortlisted the boy names down to three: Xavier, Cole, and Hudson. I was pulling for the last one…

I think you are one lucky guy. Got the women who agrees with your choice of dog/RR name and a cute dog too ! Now if you can only teach him to switch cars in the yard [%-)]

I think that’s a terrific name. Both of those breeds are beautiful dogs, and the ones of either breed that I’ve met have all had calm, sweet dispositions. You should have a great friend for life, there. Looking at the size of her paw in the picture, she’ll soon grow into her name.

Lexi, the 105 lb. lab mix in my avatar,is nick-named"Madame Queen" after the Santa Fe 5000.

Mike

BERNESE, Bernese Mountain Dog AKA Berner Sennenhund, that will be a very large friendly dog who will want to sit on your feet for company.

Just hope “Allie” doesn’t decide to become a lapdog! Beautiful puppy, Fergie!
