I am a railroader and have put everything I had in life to get to be one. I would like to talk to anyone who has time in as a railroader. I don’t mean 1 or 2 years. I mean 10 plus. I would like to talk to someone who takes their job seriously. I don’t need someone who curses their job, the management, or anything else related. I know that is how some are but this “young blood” needs the wisdom of an “old head”. One with “faith” is even better. Please let me know where to contact you.
I guess I’d qualify, though I may not necessarily have the “wisdom” you’re looking for (my railroading is real, but my vocation and hours of service are anything but typical). You could PM me on this site.
I have 11+ with the UP and put a lot of effort into getting hired. Although I have “questioned” (I am guilty of using the old saying about needing the U P to spell a certain word) some of the things the railroad does, I can’t imagine ever working anywhere else.
I imagine that you’re having some kind of crises about staying with the RR. Either you have an opportunity outside of the RR or a conflict between a relationship and the railroad lifestyle or maybe to stay with the RR you have to uproot and move. The UP wasn’t my first railroad job offer. In early 1998 I was offered a relief train dispatcher job with the WSOR. It would’ve meant a move to Wisconsin and at first my wife was all for it, but some obstacles developed and my wife changed her mind. I think we could’ve made it work, but ultimately I declined it. My original UP offer was for North Platte, NE. Again my wife became scared at the thought of moving, but jobs opened up in Iowa and they changed the offer to Iowa. Now she knows that I’ll never leave the UP, unless it’s to go to another railroad.
Feel free to PM me or send an e-mail thru the website if you think I might be someone who fits your needs.
