Two suggestions:
-
If you’re going to buy very many issues, it’s cheaper to subscribe. And you never know which issues you want – something you thought you’d never use might be in one of the issues you didn’t get!
-
You might try using more-descriptive subjects for your posts. You might attract more replies that way.
Alright, I’ll throw my hat in the ring.
A must-have for any model railroaders library, whether you plan on doing any track planning or not, is John Armstrong’s “Track Planning For Realistic Operation”. It describes how trains operate and why, how track arrangements are laid out and why, and even has a few beginners layouts suggested. This is a must-read. This is a book that you will go to over and over as you just can’t absorb all of the information in one or two readings. It’s not hard reading either. It’s claer and to the point. Spend the money, get this book, period.
I have Kalmbach’s bridges book and Sassi’s Scenery book. They are really helpful. I hit flea markets and clubs and occassionally find old MRR mags for $.50. I got a couple of years worth for a couple of bucks once. I don’t think you can have too many old copies. Even my copies from the 40’s and 50’s are useful.
What you need in your library, other than piles of mags, depends on what you are currently modeling. I do logging, so some logging specific mags are helpful.
I have a few years worth of model railroader and everyone of them have helped me. I havent read my 1954 or 56 years completely but what I have has helped. I also have the 1949 january issue. My advise is to subscribe if you have the money cause you never know if you will need those certain issues later on in your modeling career. Im only 18 and Im getting help from the 40’s and 60’s.

I don’t know if you have this tool yet. An NMRA gauge. It’ll come in handy when you’re working out track problems. Here’s a link to it.
