I need help with a coupling for a 4-6-2 by Samhongsa

have purchased 2nd hand a CNR J4e Pacific from VH (Van Hobbies) Scale Models made by Samhongsa, Korea.

The connection from the motor to the gears was broken. I hae glued the connecting piece back together but the motor shaft which is round steel just spins in it. I tried putting putty in the shaft and glue, it worked a little bit but didn’t last long. I tried more but it only pushed out the connector. It also made the shaft to the gears run rough.

Thanks for any suggestions and help.

I take it you’re talking about a ‘universal’ connection between the motor and the driver gearbox? You might want to check out NWSL, which offers Universal gear sets for just about every diameter of motor shaft. Also, if it’s a newer can motor, you can use neoprene tubing for a substitute, as long as there’s some ‘play’ in the gearbox.

Also, if it’s a brass connector on the motor shaft, you might check and see if there’s a tiny screw on the connector. They’re hard to see sometimes, and sometimes they come loose. If so, tightening the screw will firmly re-connect your universal to the shaft.

Just some thoughts.

I have 6 Samhongsas and the Universal joints between gearbox and motor differ but from what you desribe I have two engines with that arrangement and both had cracked collars. The easiest way to replace them is with R/C Aircraft latex fuel hose. Works like a charm and is cheap!

Thanks for the responses. The engine is fairly old. It does not have a copper coupling. I think I will try the fuel hose idea.

Barry:

Actually, Fergie’s recommendation of fuel hose should work really well on your connections. Just make sure you have ‘play’ in your gear-box, since a lot of older ‘can’ motors don’t have much play on their shafts. Probably the fuel hose will work better, come to think about it, because it doesn’t have as much ‘give’ as neoprene and offers a more stable coupling.

Good luck. You should end up with a smooth runner.

Thanks Fergie,

I purchased a whole foot of the fuel hose. It cost me a whole $1.35!! And it works great. I put a decoder in it and it is running really nice. I told the hobby shop about your suggestion and they said there is an amazing amount of information out there. Thanks everyone for your help.
