I missed out on buying these Athearn hoppers when they were available and I’ve decided the only way I’ll get any is to paint and decal an undecorated unit. I need to know what the proper color is for painting these hoppers.
I have one in GN and several other road names too. They are quite awesome and highly detailed. The can be found on EBay quite often and the last train show in Houston had many.
I would do a search first/Ebay/Google/ Hobby shops and one will show up before going to the trouble of making one your self.
I’ll respectfully disagree with you regarding availability on eBay. I have been searching weekly for the white GN hoppers. Not a single one is out there for sale. There are plenty of the Big Sky Blue hoppers, which I’m not interested in. I’ll try the hobby store you listed, but every store I’ve called have been sold out.
I have one of the aforementioned hoppers, but it’s in the process of being weathered heavily. It started out a slightly grayish white if that’s any help…
Don, I am a GN custom painter-and modeler. I have done several covered hoppers in GN’s Grain Loading Gray scheme. The color I have found to be the best match for the very light gray used on this equipment is a Polly S Military Miniatures color called IJN Sky Gray. IJN stands for Imperial Japanese Navy, and the ‘sky gray’ is the color used to paint many of the aircraft used in WWll. It’s a very whitish gray, and for my money, the best match for the GN color I’ve found so far. Hope this helps.
Glad you got them, there not easy to find anymore. I was searching for a CB&Q 2970 hopper which they had also. I now have 6 of them, the rock,2 gn blue and gray, cb&q,bn, np.
