hi all… i left my climax on the track while blowing leaves.the track is on the ground and now i have dirt and grit and fine particles all inside my running gears.i can hear the grit when moving the walcherts rods back and forth.whats the best way to clean this? i have shop compressor but dont want to blow the crud deeper into the gear box. i hate i did this.what about alcohol in a spray bottle?
I would disassemble the whole thing, wipe it all down, and relubricate if you so much as suspect you could get crud deeper into the running gear.
I would do what PTV said, you can purchause “plastic safe” electronic cleaner in a spray can, CRC makes a good one, that way you can wash, and clean with pressure at the same time, Bill
Is this a live steam Climax or a Bachmann electric one? If live steam, I would not dissasemble as you might loose factory set gear mesh. WD40 with a nozzle is good for flushing the axle gear boxes and running gear, allowed to flash dry, then relubricate with proper bearing oil and grease.
thanks guys…its a bachmann spectrum series. i used electronic cleaner and air.still dont feel good about it . i bet i dont do it again.
I have only ever opened up a B’mann 4-6-0 “Big Hauler.” It was not sealed up like its LGB and PIKO counterparts. I cannot speak for your model, but I bet it’s gears are similarly exposed. It really might be worth pulling it apart and inspecting all the gearing. - Eric
The climax has externally geared axles like the heisler and the shay, so even more exposed.
