I'd rather be lucky than good.--2 for 3

Winning bid on eBay $2.51. Looks like they might need some paint.

$14.95 shipping?

$3.85 Priority–cost.

Winning Bid–$7.50 632 pages 900 illustrations. 121 photos. (now if it is the old time steam, I’m home free.)

I happen to have a copy of it. Some of it is, but most of it isn’t. However, there are some Fred Jukes’ photograps of the early Overland in the late teens pulled by p-1 4-6-2’s. There are a lot of Steinheimer photos in it, also. You got it for a good price, so rejoice.

What you really need is Guy Dunscomb’s “A Century Of Southern Pacific Steam Locomotives”. There are some very good pictures in that of SP power in the first 20 years of the 20th Century. 4-4-0’s, 2-6-0’s, 2-8-0’s, 4-8-0’s, etc.

It just so happens that there is a copy of Dunscomb’s book on eBay at this very minute. It looks like it’s in very good shape. The buy it now price is $75.00 (minimum bid 49.99). I am not affiliated with this auction in any way. Even the buy it now price is reasonable given that the book is out of print.

OTOH, what am I saying? My own copy is over 40 years old and is falling apart. Maybe I should buy it.

It’s old time - a history of the making of 3 men who became Robber Baron’s - using the Government’s money - while ostensibly building a transcontinental RR.

Good book. Lot’s of historic pictures, and a fascinating story of opportunistic merchant’s who became famous in CA - Leland Stanford, C.P.(?) Huntington, & Mark Hopkins.

And if you’re really knowledgeable about railroads, there are some real howlers in Beebe’s book. I forget which page it occurs on, but there’s a photo of an SP freight in Arizona pulled by a Mikado. In the caption, Beebe calls the Mikado a “rara avis (rare bird - my note) on any roster”. Yeah, right, Lucius. There were something on the order of 10,000 2-8-2’s built for service in North America.

However, one of the more fascinating pictures is a Steinheimer (IIRC, I’m in ME, the book is in CA) picture of an SP freight with an A-6 (rebuilt A-3) 4-4-2. It’s kind of a weird application of an 81" drivered locomotive designed for passenger service.

Mouse !! i thought of you today while I was looking at that auction, Strange but True!!

Beebe was a strange duck, but he writes some fine flowery prose. The factthat that book has a bunch of Steinheimer photos makes it worthwhile.
