Ideas for sidewalks and roads

Getting ready to put in some houses, businesses etc. on my layout. Looking for ideas and suggestions on how to make side walks and how to make roads. Used to use tar paper years ago, looking for something better looking. Also any ideas on how to make road crossings over the tracks.

I use 1/4" Masonite and styrene a lot for roads. I just used Blair Line laser-cut road crossings and styrene to build a double track curved crossing(22" & 24") - It can out quite well.

I like Durhams Water Putty for my roads. It’s a powder that mixes up to a soupy consistency that you can pour and spread. It dries hard and solid, quite quickly, and takes paints and washes well.

I use styrene for my sidewalks. I spray paint them with gray primer, and use a #2 pencil to make the lines.

I’ve had good luck using Woodland Scenics “Road System.” However I’ve come to the conclusion that WS “Smooth It” is really nothing more than plaster of Paris, which costs quite a bit less than “Smooth It.”

I use wood sheets that are about 1/16th inch thick. I use a # 11 blade to make the cracks and edges of concrete for sidewalks. I then using similiar height wood strips to line the edge of the sidewalk. I paint it aged concrete mixed with a small amount of concrete powder. Then with pastel chalks, I weather it. I use Dapp for streets just like George Sellios in the FSM kits. He has great detailed instructions for both in his kits.
