ideas scenery/terrain

I am making a piece of scenery and I can’t figure out how to make an inexpensive rock cliff. Any ideas?

Thanks, Sam

One idea is to take a piece of aluminum foil and krinkle it up then unfold it leaving as
many rinkles and creases as you can making it an inexpensive mold, then pour in
some hydrocal and let it harden. You may have to experiment a little bit but you should end up with some life like rock faces. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Carved blue foam painted with acrylic colors is fast and fair. Broken ceiling tile makes fast limestone cliffs. Neither are great but fast and cheap. I have seen better artists doing better with both.

Scenery is fun. Have some.

Thanks a ton Harvey. I’m sure your idea will work well and I’m sure I will have a great time with the forum.

I have had good success with broken ceiling tiles:

I have a webpage indexing my layout building web articles at:

Here are the rock walls i made with ceiling tiles, Tiles on left of canyon, Foam on right

Thanks to all. I would post a picture of what I’m working on but I don’t have a digital camera or a scanner.

Hi, samak. If you have a standard film camera, and need to (and are willing to pay for) getting a snap scanned and digitized, your local film processing lab can do that.

Otherwise, take some careful shots of your layout, with lots of light and narrow aperture, and ask the film folks to produce a CD. I get the enhanced resolution on my CD because the ‘consumer’, or normal resolution, does not do all that well sometimes when I post here.

We will steer you through the pix posting method once you have the CD.

Welcome!

I will bump my scenery forum clinic up, since it covers lots of how-to scenery topics.
