I just took a flyer on an IHC 2-10-2 in UP markings.
The tender is “decorated” on both sides with the red-white-blue “Overland” UP shield. I’ve never seen the tender shield in pictures. I’m wondering if the UP ever put the shield on tenders, and if so, when?
I’ve never seen the shield on the tenders of any UP steam loco photos. That doesn’t mean they never put them on, but it would seem rare at best.
In 1926, the 9000’s , 4-12-2 had the UP shield on the tender when they were new. Numerous pictures of the 9000 class with the Overland Shield are in the Motive Power of the Union Pacific book by Kratville and ranks. The shield is pictured on the several classes of engines including the a 4-6-2, a 2-8-8-0 and a switcher 0-6-0. All of the pictures illustrated were taken in the 1920’s era. This shield was on some classes of engines durning that time period and the 2-10-2’s might have used the shield also, but I could not find any pictures of the 2-10-2’s with it. The shield was used for several years but most late thirties pictures do not show it.
In general, the UP did have some engines with the shield on the coal portion of the tender, but not all of them got it and the 2-10-2 is a question mark?

It sounds like at worst the shield is an anachronism in my world, and for that, it’s not alone.
I’ll think I’ll leave the black paint bottle capped for the moment.
I found this post a couple days ago asking about whether UP ever put its “shield” on a tender as depicted on IHC Locos. Well, I had never seen a photo with one until I found this one! It’s on #9000’s vanderbilt tender. I found another with a vanderbilt tender that has the overland shield also. Whether the logo was used on other tenders, I don’t know, but it’s possible!
Fabulous pictures? Am I right that they’re from your own collection?
FWIW, the IHC folks have the shield, the '40s style “Union Pacific” lettering on the tender, and the road number on the cab. [%-)] For the money, it’s still a nice loco though.
Not from my collection, they are from the UPRR website! I hadn’t been there in about a year and thought I would see if there was anything new, and there they were!
I suppose rivet counters would object to the IHC livery, but I think it’s cool too! Nice to have a little color on all that black!
