IHC GG-1 decoder install?

Anybody do a decoder install in an IHC GG-1.
Super puller would love to bring it along when I finally switch over to DCC.

Thanks,
Jon

I have converted a lot of IHC steam engines that were not DCC ready, but not the GG1. The steam engines were easy to convert because their motor brushes were already isolated and there was room for the decoders in the boilers. The GG1 should not be that much different mechanically.

Charles,
Thanks, I’ll do some checking to see if isolation of brushes is applicable to GG-1’s. I know if I assume they are, they won’t be!
Somewhere I ran across someone who does a sound decoder(?) with electric engine sounds.
“Sounds like Trains” an apparent spinoff of QSI seems to be taking some time to get on its feet. Guess with all the innovations coming out fast and furious they we expect Rome to be built in a day.

Again thanks,
Jon

Have not done one but there is only one thing to be aware of. If you have the two motor version the brushes should be connected to the decoder in an x fashion since they run opposite directions from each other.

I believe Digitrax advertises its sound decoder as including Electric sound.

I hate GG-1s nothing against you but i hate electric trains

Thank you for that informative and useful post [xx(]

For someone who loves New England railroading so much, you must not know about or ignore the NH’s electricfied lines.

In fact, nowadays, you can’t ignore Acela.

Still, we’d probably have been better off had we talgo cars and regular diesels.

Trainfreek, try to keep the posts productive. I like to look at posts as contributions, if the post doesn’t contribute positivley, I don’t post it.

Glad to here that IHC steamers are easy to convert, i’m looking to convert my 0-8-0

Trainfreek92, so how is it running live steam models? Oh, if you’re running diesel models the output of the prototype diesel prime mover runs a generator set which sends electricity to traction motors. Hmm, sort of a psuedo electric train.

ndbprr,
Yes I’ve got a two motor and an old Rivarossi which I gutted and use as a dummy. Thanks for the info on the brush wiring.

davekelly,
Thanks for Digitrax info, I’ve been all over the place: MRR, Model Railroad News, this forum and the internet reading up on DCC and thought I had run across a mfr who had electric sounds.

Jon

Jon,

No problem. If you do go the digitrax route with the GG1, please let us know how it works out!!

sorry guys[] i will try to see reason about electric trains although you will nevder get me to buy one Jon good luck with your decoder install. Stuckarmcharing- yes i no NH runs some electric lines but i think they were more of a Steam/desiel road sorry to offend anyone

Ditto, got on also I want to convert to DCC. Did you “put it under wire” or just plain track? Thinking of doing the “under Wire” thing in short area of our layout for looks. No guts to try and make it work.
