Have a couple of IHC locos that have been sitting around for awhile. Ran one the other night, didn’t do too well. The instruction sheet has a lubrication section. It says to remove the cover and oil the axles, gears and bearings. I did, it runs much better.
My quetion is that I could only get oil to the axle of the gear further into the loco. Is there any need to further take it apart and lubricate the motor itself for long term mainternace or does lubricating as above take care of its needs?
Steam or Diesel ? Whichever the case, you’ll need to remove the boiler or shell to get to the motor, drive shaft and gearbox and lubricate them because oiling from the bottom will not reach these parts.
If diesel, I would recommend that you read the “Athearn Blue Box Diesel Power Unit Maintenance” thread that was done a little earlier today. I have a post there as do some others that should help.
The ones I have are steam. Forgot they had diesels. Looks like I will have to figure out how the boiler comes off, shouldn’t be too bad…
Will mark the diesel thread as my sons’ older diesels might be useful for the grandchildren to run, if I can reserect them… They aren’t fast and grandson has a heavy foot.
look for a screw in the stack or under the steam dome or up thought the steam chest. The other one is under the cab usually. If it has handrails on the cab you may need to disonnect them from one end
