I have a new IHC Mogul made by Mechano in Slovania. The rear (tender) coupler has failed and I cannot figure out how to remove it. The coupler box is mounted talgo style to the rear truck. The box lid is only two small “ledges” that are not removable. There is not enough room between these ledges to remove the coupler. How does it come out?
If I’m reading your description correctly, it sounds like the design that Tyco/Mantua once used, where the coupler mounting pin is on a short flexible tab that has to be pried away from the coupler from underneath to release it.
This is wierd! The email I received from this reply had a photo. That picture looked exactly like the IHC. Now, what do I do with that tab? It seems to be a part of the truck bolster.
Sorry for the confusion. I edited the photo out because I thought it was too small, and didn’t show the underside.
You can pry the tab away from the center of the coupler with a small screw driver, or even a fingernail if you have 'em. When you bend it down, the pin clears the hole in the coupler and you can pull the coupler out thru the end of the coupler box.
Thanks ol chum. Only problem now is old fumble fingers snapped the pin while attempting to put thr Kadee #5 spring in the box. I will need to cut the whole thing off and replace it with a new, body mounted Kadee box. Any idea as to which one? The center of the new coupler needs to be about .050" lower than the bottom of the tender shell.
Well, Kadee makes only one box (IIRC #232) for the #5 series of couplers (i.e. 5,58, and the long/short shank or overset/underset varieties).
If you need to raise/lower the coupler you can use styrene/Kadee shims, or you can use the offset couplers.
